In a somewhat unexpected setting - the basement of a classic tenement on the fringe of Edinburgh’s New Town – the Pottery provides workspace for amateur potters, recent graduates and well-established professionals. Coming from many parts of the world to spend a few weeks or several years here, their rich diversity of concepts and techniques gives visitors to the Pottery a real insight into the exciting possibilities of clay as a creative medium.
Currently our wide-ranging work includes practical domestic and garden ware, delicate porcelain vessels and an array of decorative and sculptural pieces. While working independently, both in the business and creative sense, we enjoy sharing the gallery space, planning the annual exhibition held during the Edinburgh International Festival, arranging the Open Weekends and of course keeping the website up-to-date and informative.
Visiting a working pottery gives an opportunity to see something of the many making processes involved; from raw clay to the display shelf is a more complex journey than might be imagined. We are happy to discuss our work with any who wish to look round the studios and look forward to seeing you at the Pottery.
